What is Extended Mail Forwarding?

Extended Mail Forwarding provides customers the ability to extend the forwarding of their mail in 6-, 12-, or 18-month increments, not to exceed a total of 18 months of extended forwarding time.

Extended Mail Forwarding is only available for permanent Change of Address. These extensions are in addition to the initial Change of Address forwarding time period of 12 months.
 

How much does Extended Mail Forwarding cost?

When you first sign up for Extended Mail Forwarding, you will have the option to extend at the following price points:

  • $24.50 for six (6) months
  • $36.50 for twelve (12) months
  • $48.50 for eighteen (18) months

If you only sign up for 6 or 12 months initially, you will have the option to purchase additional extensions in 6-month increments at $24.50 each, not to exceed 18 months total.
 

Who can sign up for Extended Mail Forwarding?

Extended Mail Forwarding is available to all customers requesting a permanent, domestic Change of Address request.

Where and when can I sign up for Extended Mail Forwarding?

Customers can purchase Extended Mail Forwarding when submitting their initial Change of Address (COA) request at moversguide.usps.com on USPS.com. You will receive an email confirmation of the Extended Mail Forwarding service purchase from AddressChange@usps.gov.

Customers with an existing, active permanent COA request can purchase Extended Mail Forwarding using the COA confirmation code and their new ZIP Code:

  • At Post Office retail windows
  • Where available, at Self-Service Kiosks in retail lobbies
  • Via managemymove.usps.com on USPS.com

See Change of Address - The Basics for more information on locating the confirmation code. If the confirmation code is not available, visit a Post Office retail window for assistance.

Note: An email will be sent to you at the 11th month mark of your COA request reminding you of your option to extend your forwarding.

Will I receive a reminder to sign up for Extended Mail Forwarding if I do not sign up when I submit my COA request?

Yes. At the 11th month mark of your COA request, a reminder email will be sent to you with the offer for Extended Mail Forwarding.
 

If I sign up for Extended Mail Forwarding, can I change or cancel the request? Do I get a refund if I cancel?

No, you cannot change your Extended Mail Forwarding request. Once your forwarding begins, your mail will be forwarded according to the duration you selected.

You can cancel your COA and that will also cancel your Extended Mail Forwarding request. If canceled, you are not entitled to a refund.
 

If I sign up for 6 months, but decide I need more time, can I extend the duration?

Yes, you can sign up for another 6 month interval at the price provided for 6 months. You can repeat this request until you have reached an 18 month extension.

If my Change of Address request expires, can I still sign up for Extended Mail Forwarding?

No, once a Change of Address request has expired, you will not be allowed to sign up for Extended Mail Forwarding.
 

What classes of mail are included with Extended Mail Forwarding?

The following classes of mail will continue to be forwarded with Extended Mail Forwarding:

  • First-Class Mail® Service
  • USPS Ground Advantage® - Commercial items
  • Priority Mail® Service
