Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is a security process that requires users to perform multiple steps or methods of authentication to gain access to certain programs or applications. It provides an additional level of security to help protect identities, passwords, and other personal data from unauthorized access and misuse.
Beginning March 6, 2025, all new accounts will be required to enroll in MFA.
Here's what you need to know about the MFA process:
- If you sign up for an account after March 6, 2025, you will be required to enroll in MFA.
- If you signed up for an account prior to March 6, 2025, you will have the option to enroll in MFA.
- When you enroll in MFA, you will be required to verify your email.
How do I set up MFA?
- After entering your username and password, you will be presented with a Verify Your Email screen.
- EXISTING customers who signed up for their account before March 6, 2025 will be presented with an MFA enrollment screen where they can select Enroll in MFA to set up MFA or Not Now to opt out of MFA.
- If you select Enroll in MFA, select Yes to use your USPS.com email or select No, I'd like to change my email to enter a different email address, then select Continue [Note that entering a different email here does not change the email address in your USPS.com account].
- If you selected No, I'd like to change my email, enter the email you would like to use and select Send Email Link.
- NEW customers who signed up for their account after March 6, 2025 will have to verify their email before they can complete mandatory MFA setup.
- Select Yes to use your USPS.com email or select No, I'd like to change my email to enter a different email address, then select Continue [Note that entering a different email here does not change the email address in your USPS.com account].
- If you selected No, I'd like to change my email, enter the email you would like to use and select Send Email Link. A link will be sent to the email you entered on the Verify Your Email screen.
- Go to your email and click on the link in the email. If you can't find the email, be sure to check your spam or junk folders.
- After clicking the link, the following message should appear on your screen, "Thank you for your verifying your email". You will also receive an email confirmation. Select Continue.
- You will be presented with the available MFA options (SMS – Phone and Email).
- Select the MFA option you would like to set up and select Continue.
- Follow the prompts on the screen, or the instructions below, to set up your MFA options.

How do I set up the Phone (SMS) MFA option?
- On the MFA options screen, select the SMS MFA option and select Continue.
- On the Verify Your Phone Number screen, enter your mobile phone number and select Send Passcode. International phone numbers are not accepted.
- You will receive a six-digit, one-time passcode via SMS to the mobile phone number you entered.
- Enter the six-digit, one-time passcode on the MFA enrollment screen and select Submit.
How do I set up the Email MFA option?
- On the MFA options screen, select the Email MFA option and select Continue.
- You will receive a six-digit, one-time passcode to your USPS verified email.
- Enter the six-digit, one-time passcode on the MFA enrollment screen and select Submit.
How do I modify my MFA options?
- On the MFA selection screen, select Modify MFA Options.
- Continue the sign in process with your preferred MFA option.
- Select the MFA option you would like to modify (SMS or Email) and follow the prompts on your screen to update your MFA options.
Who do I contact if I'm unable to set up or modify my MFA for the Customer Onboarding Portal (COP)?
If you have any trouble with the Customer Onboarding Portal MFA process, please send your USPS.com account username and phone number to the Mailing & Shipping Solutions Center (MSSC) at mssc@usps.gov with "Multifactor Authentication" in the subject line.
