What is Waiver of Signature?

A "Waiver of Signature" is initiated by the Sender and authorizes delivery of mail at the letter carrier's discretion (if area is secured and protected from weather) without obtaining the recipient's signature.

Note:

  • Waiver of Signature must be checked at time of mailing by the Sender. It cannot be amended in transit. If the item is not claimed within five days by the Recipient, it will be returned to the Sender.
  • For editions of the Priority Mail Express® Label Label 11-F printed before January 2012 (then referred to as Express Mail Post Office to Addressee), customers sending a Priority Mail Express item may instruct the USPS to deliver a Priority Mail Express 1 Day Delivery or Priority Mail Express 2 Day Delivery item without obtaining the signature of the addressee or the addressee’s agent by checking and signing the "Waiver of Signature" on Label 11-F, or indicating waiver of signature is requested on single-ply commercial label.

Domestic Priority Mail Express®

  • The letter carrier will sign for the domestic Priority Mail Express item as proof of delivery and leave the item in a secure location.
  • Waiver of Signature is not available with additional insurance, for Priority Mail Express Collect on Delivery (COD), or for Priority Mail Express COD Restricted Delivery.
  • A waiver of signature will void any insurance claims for loss of the package. (However, a claim may be filed for damaged or missing contents or for service failures).

Note: Waiver of Signature is not available with any other mail services.

What is Signature Required?

A "Signature Required" is initiated by the Sender and authorizes requiring the addressee's signature for delivery of the item.

Note:

  • For editions of Priority Mail Express Label 11-F printed on or after January 2012, a mailer sending a Priority Mail Express item and requiring the addressee’s signature must instruct USPS to obtain a signature from the addressee upon delivery of the item by checking the “signature required” box on Label 11-F or indicating signature is requested on single-ply commercial label.
  • If the signature required box is selected, an image of the signature will be provided to mailers when accessing delivery information.
  • If the signature required box is not checked the Priority Express item can be left.

A mailer must select Signature Required service for:
  • Priority Mail Express COD
  • Priority Mail Express COD Restricted Delivery
  • Priority Mail Express with additional insurance
  • A signature is required if additional insurance is purchased or for Priority Mail Express Collect on Delivery (COD)

If the signature is not required, any insurance claims for loss of the package is void if the item's status/scan is "Delivered" in USPS Tracking. (However, a claim may be filed for damaged or missing contents or for service failures).
