What are USPS Smart Lockers?

USPS® Smart Lockers are electronic, keyless parcel lockers that provide a safe, secure, and convenient package delivery and returns alternative for both package recipients and shippers.

Where can I find USPS Smart Lockers?

USPS Smart Lockers are currently being installed in Post Office lobby locations across the country. Smart Lockers will be placed in Post Office lobbies, giving many package recipients 24/7 access to retrieve their package. USPS anticipates that over 500+ Smart Locker locations will be available by Summer 2024.

To see a list of active locker locations, please visit the Locker Location Page.

How do USPS Smart Lockers work?

Currently, Smart Lockers support direct-to-locker deliveries, redeliveries, and oversized PO Box™️ packages. These capabilities allow for customers to skip the retail line and pick up their packages directly from a Smart Locker.

In the near future, updates will enable customers to utilize Smart Lockers for Returns as well.

When can I retrieve a package from a USPS Smart Locker?

You can retrieve your package after you receive the first email with a six-digit access code or a QR code. The code is generated when a postal employee places the package into a USPS Smart Locker.

Packages can be picked up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from a USPS Smart Locker location. The package is kept in the locker for 5 calendar days; you will be sent 2 reminder emails during that time. After 5 days, you will receive a final email that the code has expired and the package has been removed from the locker and must be picked up at the Post Office retail window.

What if I can no longer pick up my package from a USPS Smart Locker?

You have 5 calendar days to pick up your package from a locker or to have someone else do so on your behalf.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your QR Code. While sharing the email containing the code and instructions is permitted, make sure to think about your safety and privacy, and only share it with people that you trust.

If the package is not picked up by the end of the 5th calendar day, the item will be removed from the locker and taken to the Post Office retail window. You will receive an email notification stating that the package must be picked up at the retail window and you will need to provide an acceptable form of identification. If you signed up for text tracking notifications, you will receive text messages as well.

Note: You have up to 5 calendar days for Priority Mail Express® items. Priority Mail Express items are returned to sender 5 calendar days after the initial delivery attempt no matter when the “USPS Smart Locker” option is selected.

Once taken to the Post Office retail window:

  • Priority Mail Express items will be returned to sender
  • Most domestic items will be held an additional 10 days at the Post Office
  • International items will be held an additional 25 days
  • The package is not eligible for another redelivery
  • See What are the Second and Final Notice and Return Dates for Redelivery? for a complete list of mail retention periods. If you or a friend are not able to pick up your package within the corresponding number of days, we'll automatically return it to the sender.

Packages Destined to USPS Smart Lockers for Informed Delivery Subscribers

Informed Delivery subscribers that have a package coming that is destined for delivery to a USPS Smart Locker will see the following notification in the Daily Digest email:

  • The email address associated with the package must match the email address for your Informed Delivery account.
  • Tracking information beginning when the USPS Smart Locker package is within 3 days of delivery.
  • Indication that the USPS Smart Locker package has been delivered to a locker.
  • A one-time use QR Code to open the locker.
    • The QR Code will be displayed in the Daily Digest until the package is picked up from the locker
    • The QR Code will expire after 5 calendar days. After 5 days, your package will be removed from the Smart Locker and held at the Post Office retail counter for retrieval during their normal business hours.
