Where can the customer go to pick up mail that is being held?
Customers may go to their local Post Office pickup location based on the information on the back of their Redelivery Notice. Customers may go to the Post Office to pickup the item on or after the date and time indicated on the PS Form 3849 delivery notice.
When an item is looked up via the USPS Tracking® feature, the Post Office® information may not be provided immediately after an attempted delivery. The Post Office name, location, and hours of operations will be available when the package is returned back to the Post Office.
Where do I pick Up Accountable Mail?
If you have received a PS Form 3849 Redelivery Notice and would like to pick the item up, the pickup location is typically printed on the notice. If it is not, there are two ways to find the location: Online or by phone.

What does the customer need to present if picking up their mail at their local Post Office™?
You must present valid photo ID if you choose to pick up your mail item at the Post Office™ facility indicated on the notice. You should also bring the PS Form 3849 left by the carrier, if available. Find out what forms of identification are acceptable at the Post Office.
Can a customer have someone else pickup their held mail?
- If picking up mail for someone else, the customer needs written authorization (and their own valid photo ID). Authorization can be written directly on the delivery notice (on the back of PS Form 3849) or on plain paper (simply a note on paper saying that "a name" has permission to pick up mail for "my name", and then it needs to be signed) from the addressee.
- If a person has the same last name and address of another person that mail is addressed to, they cannot pick up accountable mail on the other person's behalf unless a standing order is in place. Or, if a customer is sending someone else to pick up an accountable mail item, they can follow the instructions on the back of the PS Form 3849.
- A Standing Delivery Order on file is considered permanent authorization (unless revoked).
